Agricultural Research & Collaboration at Zava Ranch

Zava Ranch is a Certified Organic, veganic, chemical-free working California orchard and farm. We are also a site for applied agricultural research focused on practical problems faced by growers like us. Our research is self-directed and grows out of the way we have chosen to farm: without synthetic chemicals, without animal-derived inputs, and without fertilizers. The questions we study come from our own day-to-day farm management and from our interest in finding better ways to grow food while working within those principles. Our projects are designed to produce information that can be measured, tested, and applied by Zava Ranch and other growers in real-world orchard and farm systems.

Current and developing research at Zava Ranch includes minimizing unnecessary orchard-floor vegetation intervention, developing chemical-free cultural and natural pest-management strategies, optimizing irrigation, improving soil and water conditions without fertilizers, increasing wildlife and pollinator habitat, addressing economic and operational constraints in small-farm production, developing effective field-monitoring methods, and using GIS and other spatial tools to better understand variability within orchards and support more informed management decisions.

Our approach is grounded in three principles:

Practical — Research should address problems growers actually encounter and be feasible within commercial farm operations.

Measurable — Questions should be evaluated through defined observations, measurements, costs, and analytical methods rather than assumptions or anecdotal impressions.

Transparent — Methods, limitations, implementation requirements, and results should be reported clearly—including results that do not support the original hypothesis.

Research Collaboration

Zava Ranch welcomes collaboration with researchers, agricultural advisors, extension professionals, students, and others with relevant expertise.

Grower-Led Research

Research conducted at Zava Ranch is grower initiated and carried out within an operating farm environment. Zava Ranch leads and administers its projects and remains responsible for site operations, personnel, project budgets, reporting, and required deliverables.

For collaborative projects, responsibilities—including scope of work, access to data, publication or acknowledgment, and decision-making authority—are established in advance.

From Orchard Questions to Useful Evidence

Many agricultural practices become routine long before anyone asks whether they are necessary under every set of conditions. Our interest is in examining those assumptions.

Rather than asking only whether a practice “works,” we are interested in questions such as:

  • Under what conditions is an intervention actually necessary?
  • What measurable threshold should trigger action?
  • What happens when intervention is delayed or avoided?
  • What are the effects on crop condition, irrigation, pests, soil, habitat, labor, and cost?
  • Can a practice be simplified while maintaining acceptable orchard performance?

The goal is to generate evidence that can help growers make more informed management decisions—not simply to demonstrate a predetermined outcome.
