Description

What are Organic Kumquats and how to eat them?

Kumquats are tiny citrus fruits eaten whole — peel, pulp, and all. The peel is sweet and aromatic, while the inside is bright, tart, and juicy. Bite into one and you get both at once: sweet citrus oil from the peel followed by a sharp, refreshing burst of juice.

Use kumquats fresh, sliced into salads, chopped into salsa, cooked into marmalade, candied, added to cocktails, baked with fish or chicken, or simmered into syrups and sauces.

Because the peel is the main part of the eating experience, organic kumquats are especially valuable. These are citrus fruits meant to be used whole, not peeled and discarded.

Are Kumquats just tiny oranges?

Kumquats are small by nature, but they are not immature oranges, miniature mandarins, or decorative citrus.

They are a distinct citrus type with their own history, flavor structure, and culinary use. Their value is not in size. Their value is in intensity: concentrated peel aroma, bright acidity, and the ability to use the entire fruit.

Kumquats have a long history in East Asian cultivation, especially in China, where the name is commonly translated as “golden orange.” They became known outside Asia through nineteenth-century plant collecting and trade.

Older botanical references often classify kumquats in the genus Fortunella, named after Robert Fortune, the Scottish plant collector associated with introducing kumquats to Europe. Modern taxonomy often places kumquats within Citrus, reflecting their close relationship to other citrus species and the long history of citrus hybridization.

How to Use Organic Kumquats?

Eat organic kumquats whole. Do not peel them. The peel is sweet and aromatic; the center is tart and juicy.

Fresh: Rinse and eat organic kumquats whole, or slice thinly into salads, yogurt, oatmeal, cheese boards, or desserts.

Marmalade: Slice organic kumquats, remove seeds if desired, and cook with sugar and water until thickened.

Candied kumquats: Simmer sliced organic kumquats in simple syrup until glossy. Use on cakes, ice cream, pancakes, cocktails, or cheese plates.

Drinks: Muddle or slice into cocktails, mocktails, sparkling water, tea, or hot honey-lemon style drinks.

Cooking: Roast with chicken, fish, pork, squash, carrots, or sweet potatoes. Kumquats add bright acidity and citrus bitterness.

Sauces and syrups: Simmer into a sweet-tart sauce for yogurt, desserts, roasted meats, or holiday dishes.

Preserving: Freeze sliced kumquats, dry the peel, candy them, or make marmalade when you have more than you can eat fresh.

Organic kumquats are shipped early in the week only:

Please note that we ship via Fedex 2-Day mail on Mondays (and rarely Wednesday) morning to ensure that the fresh California organic kumquats get to our customers before the weekend and are not sitting on a hot truck or in a warehouse somewhere for two extra days. If you place your order later in the week, please allow a few extra days to receive your order of California organic kumquats to ensure freshness.

Why Organic Kumquats might not be as “pretty”?

The reality is that truly organic and sustainably grown fruit is often not “pretty.” Because unwaxed organic kumquats are not treated to achieve specific “marketable” appearance, they might appear imperfect and might have visible cosmetic defects. This does not mean that fruit is bad. On the contrary, it shows that we are offering naturally-grown unwaxed California organic kumquats.

Zava Ranch – Ethical and Sustainable Operation:
