Description
About “Gold Nugget” Certified Organic Mandarins:
Gold Nugget organic mandarins are a late-season California mandarin known for their rich, sweet flavor and juicy seedless flesh. Their rind is naturally bumpy and golden-orange — not polished-looking, but full of character.
This variety is prized for flavor more than appearance. Gold Nuggets are sweet, aromatic, and satisfying to eat fresh, with bright citrus flavor that makes them one of the standout mandarins of the season.
What is the difference between Organic Mandarins and Organic Tangerines?
Mandarins are the larger family of citrus. “Tangerine” is a subgroup of mandarins, historically associated with deeper orange-red color and stronger flavor.
Why does unwaxed organic tangerine/mandarin peel matter?
The peel is one of the most valuable parts of a tangerine. It carries mandarin’s aromatic oils, citrus fragrance, and naturally occurring plant compounds. In many food traditions, unwaxed organic mandarin peel is not treated as waste — it is dried for tea, grated into baked goods, cooked into marmalade, infused into vinegar or honey, added to broths, or used to brighten sauces, salads, and desserts.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, dried tangerine peel is known as chen pi and is traditionally used in teas, soups, broths, and herbal formulas. It is valued for its aromatic citrus oils, bitter flavor, and traditional use in supporting digestion, moving qi, drying dampness, and transforming phlegm.
In Chinese cooking, dried citrus peel is used in congee, soups, braised meats, tea blends, and dessert soups.
In Mediterranean and Middle Eastern kitchens, citrus peel is used in marmalades, syrups, spice blends, baked goods, preserved peels, and infused waters.
In European traditions, orange and mandarin peel are used in candied peel, liqueurs, bitters, holiday baking, teas, and preserves.
In Latin American kitchens, citrus peel may be used to flavor drinks, desserts, syrups, marinades, and homemade infusions.
That is why unwaxed and uncoated organic tangerine peel matters.
For customers who only eat the inside of the tangerine, the unwaxed tangerine peel may not matter much. But if you use the tangerine peel, zest, or rind, the difference matters.
California Organic Tangerines might come in a variety of sizes:
California Organic Tangerines grow on a tree in a variety of sizes. Larger and smaller tangerines, with thicker skin and thinner skin, all grow on the same tree side by side. Since we strive to be a sustainable operation and not waste perfectly good organic fruit, we do not sort by size.
For this reason you might receive a variety of sizes of unwaxed organic tangerines in your shipment. All the sizes are equally healthy, delicious and nutritious.
Organic tangerines are shipped early in the week only:
Please note that we ship via Fedex 2-Day mail on Mondays (and rarely Wednesday) morning to ensure that the fresh California organic tangerines get to our customers before the weekend and are not sitting on a hot truck or in a warehouse somewhere for two extra days. If you place your order later in the week, please allow a few extra days to receive your order of California organic tangerines to ensure freshness.
Why Organic Tangerines might not be as “pretty”?
The reality is that truly organic and sustainably grown fruit is often not “pretty.” Because unwaxed organic tangerines are not treated to achieve specific “marketable” appearance, they might appear imperfect and might have visible cosmetic defects. This does not mean that fruit is bad. On the contrary, it shows that we are offering naturally-grown unwaxed California organic tangerines.
